Strategic Gaming Leader GMT and Digital Board Game Veterans Playdek Form Strategy and War Game Digital Partnership

Playdek, the award-winning digital board game developer and publisher, along with GMT Games, the board gaming leader for strategy and war games, today announced the launch of a long term partnership that will see Playdek developing digital adaptations of some of GMT’s most beloved series of games, as well as key titles from their extensive catalog. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to bring the best strategy games and global favorites to hobby gamers worldwide, building a global community of online digital strategy gamers.

The first products announced to come from the partnership are Labyrinth: The War on Terror, from acclaimed designer and intelligence analyst Volko Ruhnke; Imperial Struggle, from Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews, the award winning designers of Twilight Struggle; and the COIN Series line of games, created by Volko Ruhnke and expanded upon by other strategy genre designers. The first COIN game will be announced in the future, as will additional product lines to come from the partnership.

“We have long hoped for a partner on the digital gaming side that could bring key products from our vast catalog into the video game space, at the highest level,” said Gene Billingsley, CEO, GMT Games. “Playdek has been the benchmark for digital board gaming since their formation, and most recently reset the bar with their adaptation of our fan favorite, Twilight Struggle. They have built an online architecture second to none that will connect strategy gamers online for quite some time, and we are excited to see what they will do next.”

Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001-? portrays the U.S. efforts to counter extremists’ use of terrorist tactics, as well as the wider ideological struggle – guerrilla warfare, regime change and more. The base game will be supported after its release with the expansion product Labyrinth: The Awakening.

Imperial Struggle is a two-player game depicting the 18th-century rivalry between France and Britain. As a “spiritual successor” to Twilight Struggle, it aims to push further in the direction of simple rules and playable systems, while maintaining a global scope and historical sweep. Following a timeline from 1687 to 1789, France and Britain must build the foundations of colonial wealth, deal with the other nations of Europe, and compete for dominance.

The COIN Series (Counter-Insurgency) features Volko Ruhnke’s game system presenting guerrilla warfare, asymmetric warfare, and counter insurgencies around the world – in both historical and contemporary conflicts. Notable titles in the series are Falling Sky: The Gallic Revolt Against Caesar; Cuba Libre – Castro’s Insurgency; and Fire In The Lake – Insurgency in Vietnam, among others.

“We have been very fortunate to work with the best licensors and designers in this business,” said Joel Goodman, CEO, Playdek. “Focusing on the great strategy and war game digital space makes a lot of sense for both companies. This player community is one of the most dedicated and supportive in any gaming genre. Our relationship with GMT is everything we could want in a partnership.”

Labyrinth: The War on Terror is slated to come to Steam later this year, with a mobile release following in 2019. Both Imperial Struggle and the first release from the COIN Series will be published in 2019.
